It is dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu and is one of the Char Dhams , the most sacred places mentioned in the religion . It is an ancient temple whose construction is believed to have been done in the 7th-9th century. The town around it is also called Badrinath after the name of the temple . Geographically, it is situated in the Garhwal region , amidst the high peaks of the Himalayan mountain range , at an altitude of 3,133 metres (10,279 ft) above sea level. Due to the harsh weather conditions of the Himalayan region during the winter season, the temple is open for a limited period of six months of the year (from late April to early November). It is one of the busiest pilgrimage sites in India; In 2012, about 10.6 lakh pilgrims were recorded arriving here.
The Badrinath Temple worships Badrinarayan, a form of the Hindu god Vishnu. It houses a 1-meter (3.3 ft) tall idol made of Shaligram , believed to have been excavated from the nearby Narada Kunda and installed by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. The idol is considered by many Hindus to be one of the eight self-manifested Kshetras (self-manifested idols) of Vishnu. Although the temple is located in North India, the chief priests, called "Ravals," are Brahmins of the Nambudiri sect from the southern Indian state of Kerala .
The Tapt Kund of Badrinath is a legendary hot water spring where Lord Vishnu performed penance here and it is believed that the god Agni resides here, which keeps it always warm; devotees bathe in it before visiting the temple to purify themselves, as the pond is believed to cleanse oneself of sins and diseases. According to the legend of Shankaracharya , after the idol found from Narada Kund was installed here, divine fire and hot pond appeared, which is below Garuda Cave.
It is said that Lord Brahma himself exists at this place and if someone perform rituals and Shraddha Karm for the departed souls of is deceased family member, they get salvation from the cycle of the birth and death one after another.
